GitLab has officially launched GitLab Duo Enterprise, an advanced AI-powered coding tool designed to enhance developer productivity across every stage of software development.
Now generally available, this tool integrates artificial intelligence (AI) to help users develop secure software more quickly and efficiently.
Expanding AI Capabilities Beyond Code Creation
The new AI capabilities in GitLab Duo Enterprise include code generation, code completion, and context-aware autocomplete features. These features assist software engineers beyond just writing code, providing AI tools to streamline other tasks within the software development lifecycle.
GitLab’s research indicates developers spend less than a quarter of their workday on coding. The remaining time is often used for understanding existing code, debugging, testing, and other tasks.
To address this, GitLab Duo Enterprise includes various AI-powered tools such as a chatbot assistant, flaw detection and resolution systems, root cause analysis, summarization, and templating tools. Additionally, a dashboard allows users to track the impact of AI on their workflow.
The Chief Product Officer at GitLab, David DeSanto, said, “Organizations want AI that goes beyond code creation to ship secure software faster and deliver more value to their customers.” GitLab Duo Enterprise provides an end-to-end solution that embeds AI across the entire software development lifecycle.”
Key Features of GitLab Duo Enterprise
GitLab Duo Enterprise builds upon the capabilities of GitLab Duo Pro by adding features tailored specifically for larger enterprises. These enhancements improve workflow efficiency, identify vulnerabilities, and provide a more comprehensive AI-driven experience.
Both GitLab Duo Pro and GitLab Duo Enterprise come with GitLab Duo Chat, a natural language assistant designed to support engineering and non-engineering tasks. This assistant can explain code, clarify terminology, and test code functionality upon request.
GitLab Duo Enterprise includes several features that are unavailable in the Pro edition. For example, it offers root cause analysis to help identify and resolve bottlenecks in continuous integration and delivery processes. The Enterprise edition also includes summarization and templating tools to manage discussions, merge requests, and code reviews effectively. It also features an AI impact dashboard, which provides insights into how AI tools influence the software development lifecycle.
On the security front, GitLab Duo Enterprise introduces a vulnerability explanation system to help developers and security teams detect potential flaws and understand how they could be exploited. It also includes a resolution tool that generates merge requests automatically to fix these vulnerabilities.
Availability and Pricing: How to Get It
GitLab Duo Enterprise is now an add-on for enterprise customers using the Ultimate package. It is not available for customers on the free plan or those with a Premium subscription.
The additional cost for GitLab Duo Enterprise is $39 per monthly user.
During the announcement of its general availability, DeSanto said GitLab’s commitment to secure coding “while prioritizing data privacy and protecting intellectual property”
This stance is a direct response to the challenges faced by competitor GitHub, which faced legal issues over integrating Microsoft’s Copilot. GitLab has clarified on its website that customer code and data are not used to train AI models.
